Reading/Language Arts

  • TLS Books Free Worksheets This site is full of free educational worksheets for PreK to Grade 5--especially useful if you are looking for worksheets to give a young student extra practice with reading or math skills.
  • Best Children's Book.org This website is a good source if you are looking for books by subject or level.

The Michigan Electronic Library (MeL) for Kids

The Michigan Electronic Library not only allows you to interloan materials, it also has a wealth of databases that are useful for students. Enter the kids portal here. Inside you will find many useful resources, including:

  • The School Center from Learning Express Library, which offers skills improvement in math, language arts and social studies.
  • The World Book Encyclopedia online--great for beginner's reports.
  • PebbleGo, a fun site for the youngest kids to explore the world we live in.

The Michigan Electronic Library (MeL) for Teens

MeL's offerings are broader for high school students. Enter the teen portal here to find scholarly articles for reports, college exam preparation resources, and resume building.

  • College exam practice tests can be found at the LearningExpress Library.
  • The Job and Career Accelerator can help you build your first resume.
  • Tutorials that help you improve your computer skills in areas such as graphic design, word processing, and database management can be found at the Computer Skills Center.
  • There are also multiple resources for finding articles and information for reports, essays and term papers. Two to try: Explora and Brittanica.

Citation Generators

  • The Purdue University Online Writing Lab (aka Purdue OWL) has an excellent citation generator. The site has lots of useful information about writing research papers, and is best for high school students.
  • The Citation Machine is another helpful option. This one is better for younger children (elementary and middle school.)
  • The citation generator that is run by the Online Computer Library Center, which librarians love, is called Cite This for Me.
