The Winter Reading Contest
Teens Welcome!

Can you read more than your parents? This year you can challenge your folks to outread you during “Book Your Winter Escape,” Ransom’s fourth annual adult reading contest. Read as much as you can between February 11th and March 18th, fill out a brief review form for each book, and your name will be entered for prizes! The top teen reader will be awarded a $25 gift card from Barnes and Noble at the end of the contest. For more detail, see the article on the front page.
Word Play
March 6 at 2 p.m.
Do you like word games, crossword puzzles, and jokes? If so, Word Play is for you. We will play a variety of games and do activities that all involve words or writing in some way. Games may include Boggle, Speed Scrabble, Hangman, and MadLibs. Puzzles may include crosswords, word searches, anagrams and word scrambles. Bring a friend! Please register by March 3.
Ophelia in the 21st Century
March 16 at 6:30 p.m.
Mothers and daughters, this is something for you to do together! Multiple copies of Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls by Mary Pipher, Ph.D. will be available for you to read this winter. Author Pipher suggests that, despite the advances of feminism, young women continue to be victims of abuse, self-mutilation (e.g., anorexia), consumerism and media pressure to conform to others' ideals.
On March 16, we invite mothers and daughters to come together to discuss the book and the issues it raises. Snacks will be provided, and a guest speaker will provide up-to-date information on how to help girls and women develop a strong sense of self. Guest speaker TBA. Please call to register by March 12.
Caffeine Teens
Every other Monday @ 3 p.m.
January 4 and 18, February 1 and 15, March 1, 15, and 29
REMINDER:
Remember to finish reading 24 Girls in 7 Days—we'll be making a new movie in January!
Cartoon Drawing:
Jeff Haas is a Plainwell resident and a comic artist. He has volunteered his time to provide activities and advice to kids who love to draw. We are starting a list of kids (grade 3-up) interested in participating. There has been enough interest to start this group: the library will be calling people in January to set up a day/time to meet.
NEW: Teen's Writing Group
3rd Monday of the month @ 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
December 28, January 18, February 15, and March 15
Creative writers—unite! The new teen writer’s group at the library is designed to let you share your work in a supportive environment. You can give and receive constructive advice about your writing while talking to others who share your interests. We will meet once a month for an hour and a half, and snacks will be provided. Bring a piece you are working on to each meeting. New members always welcome!
Mad About Manga
Tuesdays 3:30 - 5 p.m.
This student-run fan group is dedicated to all things manga and anime! Stop by on any Tuesday and share your thoughts and opinions on the latest releases, what you’re reading, cosplay and more!
Community Corps
3rd Thursday of the month @ 4 p.m.
December 14, January 21, February 18, and March 18
This group is designed to help you complete your community service hours while helping the library earn some extra funds! We meet once a month. (We usually have a small project at each meeting that earns you community service credit as well!) New faces are always welcome. The Community Corps will be sponsoring the Indoor Olympics program on February 13, and plans are underway for some other fundraisers as well. Stop by any meeting and find out what's happening!
