Just before Christmas, we had a special visitor at Storytime!

Ransom Puppeteers
Brilliant Debut

The performance of Beached, the Ransom Puppeteers original play, was held on November 15th. The audience, which filled the Puppet Theater area to near-maximum capacity, enjoyed a mostly 9-year-old company performing well beyond expectations. The New Yorker called the world premiere of Beached, “a stunning collision of the natural and industrial, a fable for our time and all times.”

Look out for another original play by the Ransom Puppeteers next fall, and please, if you are aged 8 – 11, consider joining us!

*Look in the upcoming winter newsletter (and on this website) for more elementary school-age activities on Tuesday afternoons at 4:00 p.m.

Parachute Playtime
Fridays 11-11:30 a.m. January 13th - March 30th

This once-month program will now be every week!

Your preschooler will love burning off some energy while making new friends at Parachute Playtime! Shaking the chute, playing “popcorn” and many other games make 30 minutes fly by. No two sessions are exactly alike!

Elementary Kids: Read-Write-Dance
Tuesdays, 4:00-5:00 p.m. Jan. 3rd-Mar. 27th

Kids often create wonderful stories—why not give them ownership by putting the stories on paper? This winter, kids aged 8 – 11 can come to the library to work on creative writing themselves, hear good stories read out loud, and stay active afterward with some dance-time.

Guitar Club
Thursdays, 3:00 - 4:30 Jan. 12th - Mar. 29th

Come to the Ransom Library after school for guitar instruction, practice, jam, and talk. Joe Gross spent the better part of his twenties and early thirties teaching music lessons and playing in bands—come pick his brain (or show him a thing or two)! Don't worry if you're new to playing or if you're a guitar veteran, he (we) will flex with the needs of players and cover anything from beginning music reading to learning specific rock, blues, country, and bluegrass tunes. Bring your own acoustic or electric, or just come and use one of our guitars. If you play something other than guitar, bring your instrument and join in with guitar players (No Cowbell). Start time will be informal, don't worry about being late! All ages are welcome.

Mother & Daughter Paper Doll-Making
Saturday, February 4th 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Due to its popularity, we're bringing this program back from last winter! Bring your own supplies, or use ours, to make a dazzling array of paper doll clothes. You will need a pair of small, sharp scissors (and whatever of your own materials you'd like to bring). Go home with a paper doll and the beginnings of a lovely wardrobe you and your daughter have created together. Limit 8 moms and daughters (16 total).

Please register by February 1st.

Caterpalooza (Eric Carle Night) New Event!
Tuesday, March 27th @ 7:00

This year, rather than hold Dr. Seuss night, the Friends of Ransom Library will begin a new tradition of commemorating other beloved children's authors as well (Don't worry—they'll do Dr. Seuss every other year!). The new tradition will begin with a celebration of the works of Eric Carle, in particular his classic title, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Please come in costume if you'd like, enjoy readings of great Carle books, and have a tasty treat, too! This signature event is really a celebration of the wonders of reading aloud, of being read to, of nurturing with story and being nurtured in turn.

Train Party! New event!
Saturday February 11th 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

This program targets boys of all ages, but anyone who loves trains is welcome—bring your favorite train stuff to set up and/or show off in the library (electric or not). Dress up as an engineer or the beloved Thomas! We’ll sing train songs, read train books, and share our train-love.

Please register by February 9th if you have something to set up.
